Montréal

Old Viger Station - © Tourisme Montréal, Stéphan PoulinMontréal is a beautiful island city, rich in history and yet very modern. It is the first North American city to be designated as a UNESCO City of Design.

Dubbed the «city of a hundred steeples», Montréal is renowned for its many universities, excellent medical and scientific research centres, vibrant arts and culture community and fine dining. There are also scenic green spaces such as Mont Royal Park and Jean-Drapeau Park. Although Montréal is the world’s second largest French-speaking city after Paris, English is also widely spoken.

Montréal’s diversity and effervescence has earned it a reputation as an outstanding site for major events and festivals. A great city for walking or biking, Montréal also has a efficient public transit system, and the Palais des congrès, venue of the IPY 2012 Conference, is just steps away from the city’s many hotels and restaurants.

Visit the city’s website for more information.

Transportation

Montréal has an underground metro system, which is a quick and easy way to travel around the city. The Metro connects the downtown area to major tourism attractions, as well as bus stops and train stations. You can purchase single fares, day passes or weekly passes. The Palais des congrès is directly linked to the city's metro system. For more information visit the Société de transport de Montréal website.

Directly from the Palais, you can also access the famous Montréal Underground Pedestrian Network, which is a 30-kilometre network of walkways with over 1,700 shops and restaurants under downtown. Learn more about the pedestrian network.

Bordered by the St. Lawrence River and the downtown core, Old Montréal features cobblestone streets and is a popular tourist destination with numerous historic homes and buildings, including the Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the largest cathedrals in North America.

Montréal has a number of world-class museums, including the McCord Museum of Canadian History, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, the Biodome and the Biosphere. The Montréal Botanical Garden also ranks as one of the world's largest and most spectacular botanical gardens. Plan your trip with Tourisme Montréal.
